Styropan was founded in 1982 in Greece. The company has been successfully manufacturing top quality insulation materials for more than 30 years. In 2009 the construction of the added new-built factory was completed and the production of eXtruded PolyStyrene products began.

 

 Styropan XPS eXtruded PolyStyrene is a synthetic foam material, widespreadly used in our country as well as worldwide with many applications in the building industry. It is of closed cell structure, which by a process of polymerisation and continuous extrusion turns it into insulation boards. 
During the production of styropan XPS, the raw material mixture is homogenized and liquidated under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure in special extruders. Upon exiting the extruder and as the pressure drops the gas expands causing the mixture to form a foam which is finally shaped into boards, which are then led by special machines to be cut, for their surfaces to be treated and their edges trimmed.
The final product is a homogeneous-insulating material with closed cells of 0,05 to 0,5 mm diameter and with a wall thickness of only 1mm. What is impressive is that, despite the fact that 97% of its volume consists of inert gas and the remaining 3% is the walls ressembling a honeycomb, stryropan XPS eXtruded PolyStyrene is a material having excellent thermal and mechanical qualities.

 

Due to its excellent thermal and mechanical properties styropan XPS is widely used in a number of applications offering architects,engineers,builders and craftsmen reliable building and refurbishing solutions.

Perimeter Insulation 

 

Perimeter insulation concerns the parts of the building envelope that are in contact with the ground. Extruded polystyrene is used for exterior insulation of walls and basement floors as well as for floors of the building foundation generally. High compressive strength, low moisture absorption as well as flexibility and ease of use perhaps make XPS the most suitable insulating material available for these applications.

 

 
Thermal Insulation of roofs

 

Styropan XPS eXtruded PolyStyrene is used to insulate both flat and sloping roofs. It should be considered that the roof is the part of the building envelope that is most strongly stressed from the weather. Particularly, in the case of an inverted roof as well as in the case of a green roof, XPS is superior to other insulation materials. In this type of construction, the sealant layer is placed below thw XPS which protects it from high temperatures during the summer months and extends the usage life of the whole construction.  

 


 Thermal Insulation of floors

 

As styropan XPS eXtruded PolyStyrene is produced in different compressive strengths, it can be used for a wide variety of flooring types. Hence, it is used on floors of homes, offices, shops, industrial buildings, warehouses and cooling chambers. 


Exterior Insulation - ETICS 

 

Having high tensile strength values perpendicular to faces and low thermal conductivity, XPS is used for thermal insulation of external walls, protecting the buildings envelope from extreme temperature flunctuations and helping to ensure conditions of thermal comfort in the buildings internal climate. Its superiority is presented in the low areas that are exposed to impact stresses and moisture.

 


Interior Insulation 

 

 Styropan XPS can be used to insulate the buildings from the interior when an external thermal insulation composite system cannot be applied. Research should be undertaken to determine whether a vapour barrier is needed to prevent moisture condensation to walls.






 

Performance advantages



Styropan xps is manufactured in accordance with EN 13172 and EN 13164 using CO2 technology and is quality cotrolled by Guteschutzgemeinschaft Hartschaum e.V. (GSH). The rigid foam boards can be used with great versatility to insulate the building envelope. Variations in the slot die allow board thicknesses from 20mm to 100mm. The smooth foam skin resulting from the extrusion process remains on the boards or is mechanically removed to achieve better adhesive strength in combination with concrete, mortar or construction adhesives. The boards manufactured in order to be used in External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS) recieve a special embossed surface pattern while the boards used inside the formwork before pouring the concrete recieve linear grooves. 

 

 The properties that differentiate styropan xps among other insulating materials are high -up to 500 kPa- compressive strength, low water absorption and exceptional thermal resistance. That is why, green and parking roof application as well as base insulation (splash water zone of the ETICS) are the most common field of application.

Boards or rigid extruded polystyrene foam used for thermal insulation of the concrete wall areas within the brickwork (cold bridges) e.g. columns,beams or ring beams, lintels (doors and windows), basement wall elements and additionally areas with increased thermal flows which can significantly increase the risk of damages if they remain uninsulated.

The dimensions of the boards are 250cm x 60cm. The extrusion skin of the boards is shaved and linear grooves pattern surface is received, so that greater adhesion is achieved.

The xps boards are fitted inside the formwork before pouring the concrete,that is why careful vibration should be an important matter to consider (stack effect must be avoided).

Boards or rigid extruded polystyrene foam used in External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS). Aditionally they are used in the ' cold bridged ' areas or as a perimeter (base) insulation. The installation of the panels can be performed through enhanced adhesion, due to the embossed-patterned surface. Optimum results can be obtained through anchoring with plastic nails

 - Styropan XPS products can be sensitive to direct, long-term exposure to UV-radiation,therefore this effect must be taken into account with protective meausures.

 - Styropan XPS products are classified in Class E in accordance to EN 13501-1. They are considered combustible materials, therefore they must not be exposed to flame or other sourcres of ignition. Storage places should be well ventilated, keeping distances from other combustible materials.
